Silverlight 2.0

Silverlight 2.0 is released in final version on 14 October 2008. The 2.0 version download includes a subset of the .NET framework compatible with the full framework and offers extensive opportunities for the realization of web applications. It is a competitor to Adobe Flash technology and it is preferred for videos applications.

Silverlight and XAML

For Silverlight 2.0, a vocabulary of XAML has been defined specifically to make it easier for webmasters to achieve light applications online.

Relying on the specification of this vocabulary, it will be possible for third parties to develop tools that can read and write in the XAML format.

Interface components

The Silverlight Control Pack (SCP), under the Microsoft Permissive License is a system developed by Microsoft, which allows you to add new components for interfaces or backend of the platform. It helps to understand how the widgets operate in the system and interect with the implementation.

The following components are already included in the SCP: DockPanel, viewbox, TreeView, Accordion and AutoComplete in addition to défault components: DataGrid, ListBox, Slider, ScrollViewer, Calendar and other controls.

Development

We can build an application with Visual Studio 2008 Express or Expression. Microsoft makes no secret that his goal is to attract developers on this platform to sell the commercial version of Visual Studio on a larger scale. It is so expected that this edition offers much more functionalities.

Nevertheless, in order to expand the base of developers, Microsoft supports the development of an extension to Eclipse to make Silverlight 2.0 applications. The project will be put online by its creator, Soyatec, on Sourceforge.

It is possible to program in C#, JavaScript, Basic and various languages supported by. NET.

Opportunities and Benefits

Microsoft announces mass adoption of its framework. 30% of U.S. interautes already use it.

Silverlight applications will be secured by the Silverlight DRM that protects connections. Superior multimedia opportunities, a more complete interaction with the user, this will be the benefits for the user.
